This book is the result of contributions from numerous people and institu-tions, all of whom deserve our sincerest thanks. First, the staff and students of the English Language Centre and the Geography and War Studies departments at King’s College London, who both inspired it and offered unerring support during its development. Particular thanks go to Tony Thorne, Robert Hydon and Helen Fisher, and to Faye and Alexander Murray, two younger members of our ‘support team’ whose IT expertise both helped us immensely and filled us with considerable humility! To Averil Coxhead we extend our appreciation for permission to include the Academic Word List featured in the book’s Appendix. We are also extremely grateful to Robert Greenhill and Anne
Furlong for their generosity in extending us permission to use extracts of their
PhD theses for illustrative purposes, and to King’s College London for per- mission to draw on the theses of James Griffiths and Pamela Vass for examples of good practice. Although we were unable to contact Drs Griffiths and Vass despite extensive efforts, we hope they feel, like us, that their ‘contributions’ are a valuable addition to the book.
Last, but by no means least, we owe a great debt of thanks to Melanie Have- lock, Commissioning Editor at McGraw-Hill, for her confidence in and support of the project from the outset. Her efficiency and sensitivity have smoothed the passage of the book from a fairly ragged first draft to what we hope is a rather more polished final product, and made the whole process nothing but a positive experience. We are similarly grateful to the reviewers of the manuscript and to all staff at McGraw-Hill involved in the book’s production, marketing and sales, and in particular Lin Gillan, Product Manager for the
Study Skills list.
